Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park shares a border with both Arizona and Utah. It is home to many of the Navajo nation and much of the land is off-limits to the casual tourist as many parts of the Tribal Park are considered to be of great spiritual significance to the inhabitants.
Monument Valley is a region of the Colorado Plateau which is characterized by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching nearly 1000 feet above the valley floor. It is located near the well known and often photographed Four Corners Area. The bulk of the valley lies within the boundaries of the Navajo National Reservation and is accessible from US Highway 163.
Director John Ford used the location for a number of his best known films, and thus it has been said its five square miles have defined what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West.
