When winter delivers it harshest blows to Yellowstone National Park, in Wyoming, the park only becomes more and more beautiful. The geothermal features in Yellowstone are massive and provide entertainment for all ages during their eruption. One of the most popular geysers is Castle Geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin. Located in fairly close proximity to the ever famous Old Faithful, these two put on shows that rival the best. In the -31 degree temperatures, the heat of the sunrise causes the steam and smoke from Castle Geyser to fill the skies creating ominous appearing environments. There is a wonderful mystery about the steam from the geyers, particularly in winter when the steam and mist hold in the air for what seems enternity to a photographer. The small gift of momentary warmth is most welcome to those who brave the extreme temperatures of Yellowstone during the winter months. The heat of the runoff allows the steam to linger above the patterns formed in the landscape by the chemicals in the water. The soft, low light of winter's sun only serves to make a magnificent feature of nature just that much better. An experience not to be missed by anyone.
