As fall approaches in Yellowstone National Park, the call of the bull elk is heard around every corner. The bugling sound, a high pitched squeal can be heard for miles as the bulls define their territory and try to win the cows for the upcoming mating season. The bull will fiercly protect his harem, sometimes to the death when the large antlers lock and the elk cannot separate from one another without serious damage. Carcasses have been found with the antlers still locked together when the snow begins to fall. An unkind ending for these magnificent mammals.
