Early morning sub-zero temperatures and freezing fog create a winter wonderland in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. The geyser basins and geothermal areas are particularly affected by this phenomenon due to the added humidity in the air. Creating a magical effect, this wonderland of winter comes alive with the coating of ice on the trees, bushes, ground cover, or anything in its path. The next ingredient is the rising sun and the steam which results from the heat. In reality, these trees frequently referred to as "bobby sox" trees due to the white banding at the bottom, are dead as a the result of the geothermal runoffs. The ice coatings glisten in the rising sunlight creating a magical wonderland with hoar frost.
A winter visit to Yellowstone National Park will give one lasting memories of snowy landscapes, steaming geyser basins, and incomparable wildlife viewing.
