In the Central Serengeti Plain in Tanzania, East Africa, prides of lions are often found resting in trees. The tree, a Kigelia, are common throughout tropical Africa are often referred to as "sausage trees" due to the hanging sausage like fruit it bears. The big cats seems to love the long, strong branches which can hold the weight of many lions at once time. On this particular visit, only one lion was napping with an apparently full stomach from an earlier feast that day. Even with the idea of "safety in numbers", this young lioness seemed quite content to enjoy a nap without her siblings or parents being nearby. Lions are generally nocturnal and sleep during the daytime hours unless disturbed by an intruder into their territory. They spend an average of two hours a day walking and roughly 50 minutes eating. Their activity peaks after dusk with a period of socializing and grooming. They then begin hunting during the night hours until dawn.
