The harsh winter weather in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, creates deep snow pack in open areas making it difficult for the coyotes to find food. Some travel great distances until they hear prey moving under the surface.
This particular coyote was spotted crossing Hayden Valley and he seemed fairly well fed for a late January day. He glances back at a couple of photographers and begins to trot through the deep snow in search of the next meal.
