The yellow-bellied marmot sometimes known as the rockchuck, lives in the western United States and southwestern Canada, including the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. It inhabits steppes, meadows, talus fields and other open habitats, sometimes on the edge of deciduous or coniferous forests, and typically prefers an elevation above 6,500 feet. They are frequently seen sunbathing on top of rocks or boulders always alert for a nearby predator.
Their territory is about 4 to 7 acres around a number of summer burrows. Marmots choose to dig burrows under rocks because predators are less likely to see their burrow. Predators include wolves, foxes, coyotes, and humans and dogs. When a marmot sees a predator, it whistles to warn all other marmots in the area thus giving it the nickname "whistle pig" because of the high pitched shrill whistle. Then it typically hides in a nearby rock pile for hours.
These marmots are easily seen in the Yellowstone Lake area as well as up on Dunraven Pass and Sheepeater Cliffs area. In the Grand Teton area these little creatures are often found up in the mountains on glacial boulders.

Great shot. Beautiful animal against beautiful background. Love the limited color palette.

Once when hiking in Yosemite update thousand feet to a Lake, spotted on Marmot on the hillside. We stopped to watch him, the range back and forth across the side of the hill getting closer and closer, until he is right by my boot. He stopped and sniff my boot, then just wandered off. Was so interested in watching them did not even take a picture. Thought that if I moved to take the picture it might startle and he was so close. You get a good shot of them here.
