Every spring wildlife emerges from the national parks and forests to begin their summer forage. The grizzly sows stay close to the road in order to protect their young from the attention of boars who seek to mate the sow. In order to do this, the boar will frequently kill the offspring so the sow begins her estrus cycle once again. Boars do not like the road area but the danger presented to the sow and cub, from speeding cars and trucks and intrusive visitors, are almost equal as she attempts to protect her young.
