Fort Stevens, located in northwestern Oregon, was constructed during the Civil War era. Its mission was to protect the mouth of the Columbia River with two other military installations.
The significance of Fort Stevens lies in the fact that in June 1942, a Japanese submarine shelled the beach making it one of only two places in the United States fired upon by a foreign power since the war of 1812.
