Taos Pueblo (or Pueblo de Taos) is an ancient pueblo belonging to a Taos speaking Native American tribe of Pueblo people. It is approximately 1000 years old and lies about 1 mile north of the modern city of Taos, New Mexico. They are considered to be the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States.
Taos Pueblo is a member of the Eight Northern Pueblos. The Taos community is known for being one of the most private, secretive, and conservative pueblos. A reservation of 95,000 acres is attached to the pueblo, and about 4,500 people live in this area. During the spring, the Pueblo closes down to anyone but Northern Tiwa for religious ceremonies which can last up to a month. In days gone by, special permission had to be obtained to photograph parts of this old pueblo and the Tiwa are still uncomfortable with cameras and restrict where photographs may be taken. All in all, even with the restrictions, it is a wonderful place to visit.
