Yellowstone National Park is located in the Northwest corner of Wyoming with its borders extending into Idaho and Montana. It is a varied land with mountains, geysers, a volcanic caldera, fumeroles, mud pots, hot springs and an incredible array of wildlife. The area portrayed in this image is at the entrance to Fountain Paint pots which are located in the Lower Geyser Basin area of the park. The name is derived from the brilliant reds, yellows and browns of the mud located in this area. The variety of colors are due to oxidation states of the iron content in the mud. As is the case with all hot springs, the heat in the caldera forces pressurized water up through the ground which is then expelled. In combination with the gasses, bubbling "caldrons" appear in many areas. Nature never ceases to amaze.
