A sunset in White Sands National Monument, New Mexico is unlike anywhere else in the southwest United States. The Tularosa Basin in the northern Chihuahuan Desert is a mountain-ringed valley encompassing one of the world's great natural wonders -- the glistening white sands of New Mexico. Here, giant, wave-like dunes of gypsum sand move across 275 square miles of desert creating the world's largest gypsum dune field. Life is difficult for the plants and animals who reside in this every changing environment. The fun of climbing these dunes and discovering the different scenes before one's eyes makes this a fascinating place for the landscape photographer.
