Valley of Fire State Park is the oldest state park in Nevada and was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1968. It covers nearly 42,000 acres, dedicated in the mid 1930's.Valley of Fire and its fiery sandstone formations, particularly in early morning hours and late afternoon, attracts many visitors from Las Vegas as it is only 50 miles away. The elevation of this wonderful gem is between 2,000 and 2,600 ft. This popular park is adjacent to Lake Mead Recreational Area and the confluence of the Virgin River. As is the case with many of Utah's notables landscapes, this park has been used for many movies including Star Trek Generations (where Captain Kirk fell to his death), Transformers, Domino, as well as many commercials for automobiles.
Just a few yards off the roads and one realizes the immense beauty and peacefulness this wilderness area offers. it was a wonderful moment when the sun began setting and the moonrise began. Fortunately the clouds gave us a minute or two to get additional gear and set up for the moonrise.
