In the fall Yellowstone National Park is teeming with nature photographers and tourists alike in an effort to capture the rut of the bulk elk. On this particularly cool morning I noticed the steam rising from the warmer waters of the Madison River and could hear the bugling of the bull elk. Knowing full well what that meant in terms of huge groups of people lining the shores, leaving vehicles unattended in the roadways some with doors thrown open, and chasing down toward the water for that special image, I turned around and pulled off into a pullout further downstream. There was not one person there and I had the entire sunrise scene to myself. After the somewhat diminished sunrise, I drove through the madding crowds of people which affirmed that I had, indeed, chosen wisely. The bull elk had moved deep into the dark shadows of the forest and all that remained were a handful of cows and calves munching with their backs to the crowds at the edge of the river.

What a wonderful image. Sandra! The sweep of the river, the angle of the sunlight and the deep shadows all come together in this one.
