Mono Lake is a large, shallow saline lake in Mono County, California, formed nearly 800,00 years ago as a terminal lake in an endorheic basin. Not having an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake. In recent years the lake levels have been quite low exposing more of the tufa formations near the shorelines which are being eroded by weather elements and tourism. Sunrise and sunset at Mono Lake can be spectacular at any time of year.
