The cougar, also known as the puma, mountain lion, panther, or catamount, is a large cat of the family Felidae native to both South and North America. Its range, from the Canadian Yukon to the southern Andes of South America, is the greatest of any large wild terrestrial mammal in the Western Hemisphere. An adaptable species, the cougar is found in nearly every major habitat type. It is the second heaviest cat in the Western Hemisphere, after the jaguar. Solitary by nature and nocturnal. the cougar is most closely related to smaller felines and is genetically closer to the domestic cat than its related species - the lion. Cougars are excellent stalkers and ambushers and pursue a wide variety of prey to satisfy large appetites. Their primary choices are deer, elk, moose, bighorn sheep as well as domestic cattle, sheep, horses. Sadly, more and more cougars have been spotted in urban areas creating problems and usually ending poorly for the animal. In recent times, a cougar was stalked in the city of Chicago and shot. They have been observed as far east as Connecticut. A magnificent and sometimes misunderstood animal. Controlled environment.

I hope that guy was tame! I always enjoy encounters with critters, but a close-up meeting with a cougar in the wild would be too intense for me. Beautiful photo of a beautiful animal!
