Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming is well known for its ferocious wintery weather. This image was captured on a relatively warm January day where the mercury only dipped to -20 degrees. The early morning sun brings little relief to those who brave the Upper Geyser Basin in winter to capture the gorgeous combination of steam from the geyers and the hoarfrost deposited on the trees. When the trees are ice covered they are referred to as ghost trees.
This relatively common occurrence creates a magical land known as Fire and Ice because of the hot volcanic activity below the earth, creating the popular thermal features and the bitterly harsh winters which combine to create the magic. The silence of human voices and the hissing of the geysers only serves to make this an experience that one never forgets. A Yellowstone winter with cold winds, bitterly sub-zero temperatures and driving snow all provide the photographer with the needed tools for images such as this.

What an interesting and amazing piece! The image played with me, as my eyes saw the foreground and envisioned a view from atop a mountain, then they meandered to the top where I see a tree close in view. I had to look throughout the composition several times to grasp what I was seeing! Very nice! You have been proudly featured in US Forests and Wilderness!
