During the summer months, Hayden Valley, in Yellowstone National Park, Wy, fills will the bison calves and their mothers. Grazing is wonderful on the lush new summer grass, after the June rains, and after a bit of nursing and inspecting the new "food" from the ground, these young bison erupt into playful antics running up and down the hillsides, still under the watchful eye of the cows who remain nearby. This is the first time I have ever witnessed this many calves in one small area and it was a treat for the eyes.
The American bison (bison bison), also commonly known as the American buffalo, is a North American species of bison that once roamed the grasslands of North America in massive herds. They were nearly extinct caused by both commercial hunting and slaughter during the 19th century. The bison made a recent resurgence largely restricted to a few national parks and reserves and today their numbers thrive.
